How I'd Do The Oscars 2016

This is something that I tried out with last year's Oscars, but I've done some fine-tuning and changed it for the better I think. While last year I gave my own list of nominations and winners from that personal nomination list, this year I'm going to pick the people and films that I thought should have taken home the golden statue in last night's Academy Awards presentation based on the real nominations. I will only be talking about a few of the major categories, so no Sound Mixing to be found here.

Best Cinematography

What won: The Revenant

What I would have picked: The Revenant

This category was a no-brainer in my mind. While films like Mad Max and Sicario featured some breathtaking cinematography, nothing quite matched the utterly stunning camerawork that Emmanuel Lubezki and his crew accomplished with The Revenant.

Best Original Score

Who won: Ennio Morricone - The Hateful Eight

Who I would have picked: Ennio Morricone - The Hateful Eight

I agree with the Academy once again - something must be wrong with the world. In all seriousness, Morricone deserved the Oscar win for his dynamic score in Quentin Tarantino's The Hateful Eight. He has a knack for building suspense and intrigue through his music, which heightens the film entirely.

Best Animated Feature Film

What won: Inside Out

What I would have picked: Inside Out

In my opinion, this was another no-brainer. While there were a couple of solid animated features that were released in 2015, nothing stood out like this brilliant Pixar masterpiece. I still contend that it is one of Pixar's finest efforts, and probably one of the greatest animated movies I've ever seen.

Best Supporting Actor

Who won: Mark Rylance - Bridge of Spies

Who I would have picked: Sylvester Stallone - Creed

This was one of the more surprising outcomes from the 88th Academy Awards. While many, including myself, believed that Stallone was a shoe-in for his performance in the excellent Creed, Mark Rylance took home the award for his turn as a Soviet spy in Steven Spielberg's war drama Bridge of Spies. While Rylance was certainly great in the movie, I can't say I agree with the Academy's decision.

Best Actress

Who won: Brie Larson - Room

Who I would have picked: Brie Larson - Room

Larson's breakout performance in Room was most certainly deserving of the award. This wasn't the strongest category of this year's Oscars, with obligatory nominations going to Cate Blanchett and Jennifer Lawrence. However, I was glad to see Larson take it.

Best Actor

Who won: Leonardo DiCaprio - The Revenant

Who I would have picked: Leonardo DiCaprio - The Revenant

I was so happy for Leo when they called his name last night for the first time in his illustrious career. While this may not be his personal best performance, it was the best performance by a leading actor from 2015, and it was high time for them to give him an Oscar.

Best Director

Who won: Alejandro G. Iñárritu - The Revenant

Who I would have picked: George Miller - Mad Max: Fury Road

This was an unsurprising pick from the Academy. Iñárritu won the same award last year for Birdman, and it seemed like all the momentum was in his favor this year as well. That being said, the Oscars are about recognizing great talent. And while The Revenant was a wonderfully directed film, it can't help but feel like a hangover from last year. George Miller came back after 30 years away from the action movie mold and delivered one of the greatest films the genre has seen in years. I would have liked to have seen him get recognized for it.

Best Picture

What won: Spotlight

What I would have picked: Mad Max: Fury Road

This was a dream scenario for me, and I realize that it was never going to happen. However, it would have been groundbreaking to see an action thriller such as Fury Road get recognized as the best picture of the year, something that hasn't really ever happened. While I understand Spotlight's importance from a social and political standpoint, I think that Fury Road was a better film all-around, and that's what the Best Picture award should be all about. Nevertheless, Spotlight is a film that needs to be seen and deserves to be recognized for its craftsmanship.

Comments

  1. How fun! Okay, my thoughts:
Best Original Score- I'm okay with Hateful 8 winning, but man that Siario score is something else and....wow I'm not even sure how to describe it.

Best Supporting actor- Okay, I have to disagree with both what happened and what you wanted to win. I honestly didn't think Stallone did much. I mean, he was less energetic rocky. That said, I thought bridge of spies guy was only there for comedy relief and was the weakest among the five. If Ruffalo won it I wouldn't have minded, but it's Tom Hardy I wanted to win. He's done tons of great films last year, but The Revenant was the only movie where not only did I feel his presence across the whole film, but I dare say he stole the movie from DiCaprio.

Best Actor- Still wanted Fassbender, felt the academy was just like "people have been complaining for six years, do we want to make it a seventh?"

Best Directing- I really don't know who could've won in this category, I mean this was stacked! As a fanboy I would have loved Mad Max to win, but I think Room, Spotlight, and Big Short would had a better chance.

Best Picture- Perfectly okay with this. I really liked Spotlight, and I saw this coming a mile away. Why? Because it's about middle aged white guys taking down the vatican basically, and well....middle aged white guys are the ones who vote so yeah.

Overall I really liked this years Oscars. Only second time watching it, but it was much better than last years. Felt like they were going through it faster though.
